LAWRENCE LITWAK Obituary

LITWAK, Lawrence On December 30, 2016, at age 67 at home in Newton, Mass., surrounded by his devoted family including his beloved wife Deborah (Faber) and his two children, Kathryn Litwak and Jesse Chernis-Grant (Robyn). Born on February 12, 1949, Larry grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of Daniel and Geraldine Litwak and brother of Susan (Louis Schmier) and their late sister Deborah (Michael Mixer). He graduated in 1970 from Princeton University, where he was a Woodrow Wilson School Scholar, and earned his JD in 1973 from Harvard Law School. Larry was a warm, charming man, of great intellect and insight, a wonderful sense of humor, and deep integrity. He practiced law for nearly 40 years in Boston, as a partner in Brown Rudnick and, from 2008 to 2013, of counsel in the Health Care Industry Team of Foley & Lardner LLP. During his prolific career, Larry structured and negotiated health care-related affiliations, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, hospital-physician relationships, formation and reorganization of multi-institutional health care systems, and more. His clients included academic medical centers, community hospitals, faculty practice plans, physicians and medical practice groups, and health care-related businesses. He played a pivotal role in major mergers and transactions that helped reshape the health care industry landscape in Boston, including the landmark merger that formed Boston Medical Center. Larry was honored with the highest performance rating in Martindale-Hubbell's peer review rating system and placed in the highest tier of leading health care lawyers in Massachusetts, by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. He was included for years on Massachusetts Super Lawyers® lists and, in his final year of practice, was named in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® in the field of health care law. A former co-chair of the Health Law section of the Boston Bar Association, Larry also was a frequent speaker on health law matters. As a colleague wrote to Larry on his retirement in 2013: "You are the 'lawyers lawyer,' a consummate professional and a gentleman. The practice of law will be diminished by your absence." Larry was dedicated in his work, but had many other interests. An avid squash and tennis player, he treasured his court time and the camaraderie at the Newton Squash & Tennis Club, a local institution, where he was a member for many years until illness interrupted. He enjoyed books and cinema, travels and wonderful nights out. But above all, Larry treasured spending time with his wife, children, daughter-in-law Robyn, his grandchildren Lily and Rebecca Chernis-Grant, and the rest of his enormous, close-knit family, including his sister Susan Schmier (Louis), his late sister Deborah Mixer, his brother-in-law Mike Mixer (Kathryn), his sisters-in-law Joan Faber (Jeff Brewer) and Carol Johnson (Roger), his Uncle Eugene Litwak (Eleanor) and Uncle Leo Litwak, and dozens of nieces and nephews and cousins. Summer idylls at Myrtle Beach and the Conway cabin in New Hampshire, perfect days in Florence with Debby, gallivants in Edinburgh with the "fabulous six," celebrations at Gray Cliff, chatting with his grand-daughters—Larry relished these family moments and looked forward to countless more. His generous, kind, and loving spirit warm the hearts of all who knew and loved him.Service will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at 11:00am at Newton Cemetery Chapel at 791 Walnut St., Newton Centre, MA. People are invited to gather immediately afterward at the Faber/Johnson home. Shiva will be at the home of Debby Faber and Larry Litwak on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:00pm and 8:00pm.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lewy Body Disease Association at https://www.lbda.org/. Oh no. We have lost a good one. A really good one.

I worked with Larry for many years at Brown Rudnick. We did not do too much work together and so it is surprising how much I liked him and enjoyed him as a part of the Firm and my world. As someone else alluded to in one of these memories, seeing Larry just made me smile. He embodied kindness, friendship, humanity.

Although I have not seen Larry in quite some time, this feels like a sad loss for me and for the world. I am so sorry that Larry is gone.

I am so sad to learn of Larry's passing. I worked with Larry at Brown Rudnick. Not only was he a wonderful lawyer but he was a kind human being. May his family find comfort during this sad time.

Princeton's Class of 1970 remembers Larry as an admired member and a friend. As one of his classmates both at Princeton and at Harvard Law, I had the greatest respect for his intellect and the greatest appreciation for his personal warmth. We send our sincere and sad condolences to Larry's family.

Jesse, Katy and Carol: you all spoke beautifully at Larry's service. Heartfelt and thoughtful, conveying the admirable qualities that others respected in him and that he instilled deeply in you....and with just enough levity to slightly buoy everyone's sadness. If I leave a memorial service feeling as though I knew that person much better than I'd ever had the pleasure of personally knowing them while they were around, then those who eulogized them did it right. And you certainly did. I'm not a religious person, but I am spiritual...so I'm sure he is proud and touched by how you expressed the sweet ways he will always be remembered.

Larry and I overlapped for several years while working at Brown Rudnick, and I undoubtedly knew him from his work on restructuring BCH while I was Boston's Corporation Counsel. I always enjoyed his gentle personality, compassion (demonstrated through pro bono representation, ethics, wise counsel.

And his laugh. Even now, as I look at his photo in the obituary, his smile I am compelled to smile back. I will miss his presence in this world.

My condolences to his family, friends and legal partners.

Larry was (and I can't believe I'm using the past tense) the smartest, most intelligent lawyer with whom it ever has been my pleasure to associate. In fact, the world lost a wonderful law school professor when he decided to toil in the daily practice of law rather than enlighten future generations of law students regarding their anticipated legal careers. I always felt a special bond with Larry, we both being "Southerners" in a "Yankee" universe for so many years. He will be missed. Both Ellen and my dearest condolences to Debby, Katy and Jesse. We have lost one of our few, remaining mensches, a sweet, kind man, and we are the lesser for it.

There are moments in life that you later recognize are central to the person you become; working with Larry was one of those moments. We worked very closely together when I was at UMASS in the early 90s, culminating in the creation of UMASS Memorial Health Care System. He was a gifted lawyer and an amazing teacher. He helped me to learn to apply my most creative thinking to challenging legal problems, to learn that as lawyers we could and should be problem solvers, and to understand that saying no to a client could be a rarity. I would not be the lawyer I am today without his guidance, intelligence, patience, good humor, and genuine warmth.

I worked with Larry when I was a relatively new associate. He was a wonderful mentor and a true pleasure to know one of those special people who made a lasting impression on me. I've thought of him often over the years and am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Debby and Katy,
I am really sad to hear about Larry's death much too soon. He was a dear, gentle and smart man . I always loved to hear the smart jokes he made on occasion that were usually accompanied by a lopsided smile he used it seemed to underline the ironic twist of the joke line. What a great guy!
Love to you all,
Carol Derry

Would like to be at the service but am in Rome for a few months.
will be thinking about you all with love.

Larry and I travelled together in Europe when we graduated from high school. We had some fun and funny times. My bag was stolen and I just bought the bare necessities. When I washed my jeans, I wore a pair of Larry's. We stayed with a friend of mine in Hamburg and we washed her teapot with soap...thinking we were helping. We felt so bad because we didn't know teapots were seasoned and weren't to be soaped. He was a really good friend and great travel partner.
