John C. Larkin

Obituary | Condolences

LARKIN, John C. Age 88, died peacefully at his daughter's home in Lancaster surrounded by his family. He previously resided at the Gables in Fitchburg, and Lowell, MA. Born June 6, 1921 in Salem, MA, he was the son of the late Edward T. Larkin Sr. and Honorah J. (Kelleher) Larkin. He graduated from Salem HS, Burdett College, and Northeastern University. During WWII he was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army serving his country in Japan, the Philippines', New Guinea, and several army posts state side. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Honorable Service Medal, and Marksman Badge. After being honorably discharged from the Army he continued to serve as a LT Commander in the Naval Reserves. He worked full-time as a federal employee retiring in 1981 after 44 years. Thirty three years were spent at the Boston Naval Shipyard where he held several management positions. He retired from Hanscom Air Force Base as the Deputy Director of Supply. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's of Padua in Shirley, MA. He is survived by his daughter with whom he resided, Mary Ellen Larkin-Root, his four grandchildren Daniel, Catherine, Michael, and Julia all of Lancaster, son-in-law Donald Root, a brother Robert G. Larkin, Sr. of Peabody, a sister-in-law Sr. Eleanor Harkins, SND of Marlboro, and brothers-in-law Kenneth Harkins of Nashua, NH and Naples, FL, and Jack Booth of Florida, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (Harkins) Larkin, his brother Edward T. Larkin, Jr., and his sisters Catherine Larkin and Margaret Bonaventura. His greatest joy in life was his grandchildren who helped care for him during his final months. He took great pride in their accomplishments and was well loved by them and their many friends who all knew him as Grampy. A military funeral will be held Monday, Dec 28, at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 14 Phoenix St., Shirley. Burial will be private. Calling hours are Sunday, December 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg.
