John E. Taft

Obituary Condolences

TAFT, John E. Age 84, of Brewster, formerly of Sudbury, who loved life, died peacefully May 6, 2010. A life-long community leader, he is widely remembered for his firm handshake, personal magnetism, energy, intelligence, wide ranging knowledge, and integrity. He enjoyed the outdoors, music, food and wines, and his expansive Sudbury garden was legendary. John and his wife, Nancy, moved to Sudbury in 1958, where he served on several town committees, was elected Selectman from 1964-1976, and successfully fought the utility company for years to bury high voltage power lines in order to preserve pristine multi-town meadows and marshes. A champion of land preservation, he served many years on the board of Sudbury Valley Trustees, a land trust. He was a board member of the Sudbury Foundation for 34 years and helped make possible the Atkinson Scholarship Program, construction of the town's Atkinson Pool, and grants to community non-profits and environmental organizations. Upon his 1987 retirement from project management at Honeywell, John and Nancy moved to his self-built house on Cape Cod in 1988. He then constructed a Habitat For Humanity house and later chaired boards of both the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House in Chatham. John earned a BS in electrical engineering from MIT in 1947. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy (Jacocks); their children, Janet and her husband Renny Merritt of Weston, Russell and his wife Janet of Charlton, and Judith and her wife Elaine Emerson of Sudbury; and their grandchildren, Breck, Riley, Sawyer, and Whit Merritt, and Emily, Kaitlyn and Andrew Taft. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the UUMH, Chatham, on Saturday, June 19 at 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Cape Cod Museum of Art, PO Box 2034, Dennis MA 02638; Endowment Fund of UUMH, P.O. Box 18, Chatham, MA 02633; or the charity of one's choice.
