Elizabeth Owens Ellis Obituary
ELLIS, Elizabeth Owens Of Cambridge, Massachusetts died May 6, 2010 at 61. Liza (or "Wendy") was born in Chicago, IL on November 30, 1948 to Arthur Leonard Ellis and Ruth Virginia Ellis. She was raised in Illinois and New Jersey, attending Walnut Hill Prep School in Natick, MA. She earned undergraduate degrees in English and Biology in 1970 from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA, and she went on to earn a Masters in Journalism in Science Communication in 1975 from Boston University. She began working as an Editorial Assistant at Houghton Mifflin Publishing, then was a Documentations Analyst at Aetna Life and Casualty, and lastly worked as a human rights Publicist for the state of Connecticut before she became a homemaker to her husband and two children in West Hartford, CT. In her mid thirties, Liza became affected by schizophrenia which altered her life dramatically and in 1987 she was divorced. In 1992 she earned a paralegal degree from Morse School of Business while writing articles for The Hartford News. She moved to Cambridge, MA in 1994 to be closer to her children. Since then she had been a freelance reporter, substitute teacher, and painter. In addition, she became a passionate advocate for human rights and a strong supporter of Ralph Nader. She was a person of great strength and selfless in her pursuit for humanitarian ideals. She was a loving mother and will be greatly missed. Elizabeth is survived by her her daughter, Sarah (Trevor) Lavoie; son, Paul Walther; grandson, Oscar Lavoie; her two brothers Arthur Ellis and Mark Ellis and his family. There was a memorial gathering held in Cambridge; a small graveside service will be held at a later date in Chicago. Donations may be made in Elizabeth's name to On The Rise in Cambridge, MA: an organization that assists women in crisis.
