Charles Rogers Gredler

Obituary Condolences

GREDLER, Charles Rogers (Age 87) passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. He was the retired assistant librarian for the Slavic Collection and Archibald Cary Coolidge Bibliographer in the Harvard College Library. He was born October 15, 1923 to the late Rev. Hazel Rugg Rogers Gredler and Rev. Frank Seraf Gredler. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps on Iwo Jima and the Philippines. He graduated from Cornell University in 1949 with an A.B. Majoring in Russian Language and Literature with a minor in Russian History and followed with an M.S. in Library Science from Simmons College. The Harvard College Slavic Collection, begun so many years ago by Prof. Coolidge, gained significance in the 1950-1980 period when interest in Slavic studies peaked. Mr. Gredler was a beekeeper and an avid gardener with a special interest in rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, camellias, dwarf conifers, and bonsai. Mr. Gredler's wife of 60 years, Eloise Electa Proper, a reading specialist and author of the successful Gredler Technique of Phonics, preceded him in 2006, as did his brother David Earle Gredler of Norwell, MA, in 2011. He is survived by brother Gilbert Rugg Gredler of Columbia, SC; sons Christopher Rogers Gredler (Gloria) of North Garden, VA. Stephen Proper Gredler, Peter Shepard Gredler (Susan) of Culpeper, VA., Michael Earle Gredler (Joyce) of Orange,VA and Paul Hunt Gredler (Anne) of Manassas VA; daughter Leslie Eloise Gredler of Culpeper, VA with whom he lived; grandchildren Megan, Timothy, Sara, Justin, Adam, Rachel, Joshua, Nathan, Rebekah; and great-grandchild Winter. In lieu of flowers, it is Mr. Gredler's wish that memorials be sent to Doctors without Borders.
