DR. PHIN COHEN Obituary
COHEN, Dr. Phin Died in Boston on January 31, 2013, at age 84. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan, their five children, Roger (Amy), Eric (Miriam), Julia, Joshua, and Emily (Rob), and 13 grandchildren. He was a doctor and biochemist. He was born in Baltimore, the only son of Israel and Maxine. He attended college at Duke University. After medical school at the University of Maryland, he served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force, and completed his medical training at Boston City Hospital and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He moved his family to the Netherlands in 1966, to enhance their lives and his and to continue his research on phospholipid biochemistry. On his return to the USA in 1969, Phin continued his work as a biochemist and medical doctor. In 1975 he charged Harvard University with misusing his hard-won scientific grant funds. Harvard made restitution of $132,000 to the NIH almost immediately but Phin lost his job and his lab. Phin continued to serve as a physician well into his late 70's. He was known for his keen insight, and his devotion to his family and his professional trainees. He adored every one of his grandchildren, delighting in their many achievements and adventures. Professionally and personally he was throughout his life a fearless iconoclast with a unique and profound sense of justice. Services will be held at graveside, in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania.
