DONALD B. COLE

COLE, Donald B. 91, of Exeter NH, died at home with his family, October 5. Professor and Dean at Phillips Exeter Academy. Published 10 books on Jackson era. Devoted husband of 65 years to Susan W. Cole; father of Doug, Bob, Dan & Susan, with 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born 1922 to Arthur and Marion Barnard Cole of High Street, Andover. Predeceased by sister Connie Cole, a fellow educator. Attended Andover Academy and Harvard 44. Served Navy in WWII at Okinawa & Guam. Lifelong participant in Grant Study and earned Harvard Ph.D researching Lawrence MA published as Immigrant City. At Exeter was History Dept. Chair, Robert Shaw White Professor, and Dean of the Academy. Mentored decades of young teachers. Given Founders Day Award in 1992. His lectures, books and eulogies were energized by crisp evidence and precise language. He loved the short sentence. Savored family, politics, Lake Wentworth and the Red Sox. Church Deacon and committee chair. Unwavering belief in thoughtful reason and the democratic process, in giving oneself to a good cause. Inspired those around him to pursue excellence and do the right thing. Celebration of life, Nov 9 at 2 PM, Exeter Congregational Church.
