1945 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
PAULA HUGHES GORDON Obituary
GORDON, Paula Hughes 68, died Friday, October 11, 2013, at home, on her beloved Cape Cod, after a five year battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by family and loved ones. Paula was born in Bridgeport, CT on February 21, 1945, attended schools in Stratford, CT and then St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in New York City where she received her R.N. in June 1966. She later received her B.S from St. Joseph's College. Paula was the Assistant Head Nurse on the transplant team at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and as such participated with Dr. Thomas Starzl and his team on the first human liver transplant, as well as numerous renal transplants. She was an exceptional nurse, caring and loving, dedicated to her profession but reaching beyond her profession to be a caring and loving person to many people, family and friends, in many walks-of-life. Through her professional life, her dream was to be a school nurse and she achieved this becoming the School Nurse and a health educator for girls and young women at the Nightingale-Bamford School in Manhattan. She was dedicated to the healthy development of young women and believed adamantly in their freedom of choice. She served on the Vestry at the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York and volunteered on many holiday food programs as well as numerous other outreach activities in Manhattan and on Cape Cod. She served as President of the Auxiliary of St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in New York where her husband, Dr. Philip Gordon, was an Attending Surgeon. Following her breast cancer diagnosis and initial treatments at Memorial Sloan Kettering she and her husband retired to Popponesset Beach on Cape Cod where they had spent over 30 years of many happy summers. Believing always positively in her successful battle with her disease, she untiringly continued her care and treatment at the Evelyn Lauder Breast Cancer Center at Sloan Kettering until her death. She was a funny, generous and caring friend to so many, and a completely devoted mother and wife. She will be deeply missed and remembered for her strength, grace and wry sense of humor, and for being cheerfully non-compliant. She is survived by Philip, her husband of 46 years, her two daughters Amanda and Margaret, granddaughter Ramona and her mother Dorothy. A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) MASHPEE, MA on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 11 AM to 1 PM followed by a 1:00pm memorial service. A memorial Service will be held at a later date in New York City at the Church of the Heavenly Rest. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Paula H. Gordon Memorial Fund at Nightingale Bamford School, 20 E. 92nd Street, New York, NY 10128. For online guestbook and directions please visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com.
