SISTER MARY A. CORNWELL SND Obituary
Sister Mary A. Cornwell, SND
In Worcester, December 2, at age 99. With the Sisters of Notre Dame for 82 years. Known early in religious life as Sister Ann Joseph. Born in Dorchester, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Harrington) Cornwell. 1953 graduate of Emmanuel College, majoring in English and History. In 1965, she earned a master's degree in reading education from Boston College. An educator for 46 years. For 23 years from 1969 to 1982, she was a reading specialist in the Boston Public Schools. Previously, she was an elementary school teacher at Notre Dame schools in Springfield, Lawrence, Beverly, South Boston, Newton and Honolulu. She also taught at Emmanuel College and the former Boston State College. Sister Mary retired in 1993 after ten years of ministry supporting social work at a veterans clinic and the Long Island Shelter, both in Boston. Predeceased by three sisters, Dorothea Casey, Rosella Marie Delaney and Loretta O'Leary, and two brothers, John and Joseph Cornwell. She leaves many nieces and nephews, and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame. Calling hours Thursday, December 5 starting at 12:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 1 p.m. at the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester. Funeral Mass to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 351 Broadway, Everett, MA 01249.
