DR.  JOSEPH JAMES MULLEN M.D. Obituary
MULLEN, Dr. Joseph James, MD 86, died Dec. 25, 2013 in Concord, MA; loving son of the late Hugh J. & Zita T. (nee Carney); beloved brother of Anita McEvoy (Dr. Robert), Jeanne OMalley (Dr. James) (both deceased), Hugh E. Mullen (deceased) (Margaret) and Zita Tumney (William - deceased); dear uncle, great uncle and survived by his long-time friend, Dr. Ronald Duncan Hunt. Joe attended St. Clement and Our Lady of Angels grade schools, graduating from St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, Ohio in 1945. After attending Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, MI through 1946, he received his B.S. from John Carroll University in 1950 and his M.D. from the Ohio State Univ. College of Medicine in 1954. Between 1954 and 1961 he completed his rotating internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Lukes Hospital, Shaker Heights, Ohio, as well as residencies in psychiatry at University Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio and at Boston State Hospital, MA. During that time, Joe also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. From 1961 to 1963 he was a fellow in child psychiatry at Judge Baker Childrens Center with appointments at Boston Childrens Hospital and Harvard Medical School. A diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he remained on staff at the JBCC for the rest of his career, serving as Chairman of the Dept. of Psychiatry, Director of Psychiatric Training, Clinical Director and acting Co-Director of the Center. He also served on multiple hospital committees, was a member of many professional societies, and a life- long lover of opera. When Dr. Mullen retired in 1993, he was a Senior Associate in Psychiatry at the Childrens Hospital and a member of the Harvard Medical School Faculty. Visitation Sunday. Funeral Mass and burial to take place Monday in Cleveland, Ohio. Arrangements by McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Westlake, Ohio.
