ARAM GHARABEKIAN Obituary
GHARABEKIAN, Aram Formerly of Boston, former Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia, Music Director of the SinfoNova Chamber Orchestra of Boston from 1983 to 1991, died unexpectedly on January 10 in Los Angeles at the age of 58. A graduate of Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory, Gharabekian was a frequent guest conductor internationally and toured extensively with his orchestras. Under his visionary leadership, the NCOA commissioned and premiered over 40 works to critical acclaim. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1988 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award for Adventuresome Programming and the Harvard Musical Association's "Best Performance Award." His performances were singled out as "Best of 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1991" by the Boston Globe. He received Armenia's Presidential Medal for his contributions to the arts in Armenia, where he will be laid to rest in a state funeral. He is survived by his mother, sister, nephew and niece, and their families. Funeral arrangements are by Hollywood Hills, Forest Lawn Cemetery, CA.
