PETER GAPOSCHKIN Obituary

GAPOSCHKIN, Peter John Arthur Of Berkeley, CA and Lexington, MA, retired astrophysicist, database specialist and programmer analyst, well beloved brother of Katherine Haramundanis and Edward Gaposchkin, passed away September 30th in Berkeley. He was 74. He completed his undergraduate work at MIT and his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. Peter's outgoing nature and interest in helping others made him many friends who were supportive in his last months after a debilitating accident, hit by a car when crossing the street. He is sorely missed. In his career, Peter had worked at NRAO at Green Bank, WV, Lawrence Livermore, CA, and San Francisco BART. He was active in local Oakland CA Toastmasters as participant and mentor, and in Berkeley Quaker Meeting where he served as Council member. He retained a long term interest in ham radio, and was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the American Astronomical Society. Services will be at a later date.

I met Peter at the December, 1968 AAS meeting in Austin, Texas. I remember him as a remarkable individual. I didn't stay in touch, but I'd be happy to call him a friend. Since I was a new grad student, he was the only person who struck up a conversation with me. RIP, Peter.

My father, Joe Fournier was a friend of Peter's and they toured the National Parks in the western states in 1959. One time, Peter got hassled by the police for illegal roadside camping, but nobly managed to keep Joe from being discovered just up the hill!

I worked with Peter at Informatics at NASA-Ames in 1979-1980. He was a unique and good-hearted person with peculiarities that made his life difficult.

I'm so sorry to hear about Peter. I only met him once, when he came to dinner at Radcliffe in the late '50s, but he was a remarkable person and I remember him well even after so long.

I remember Peter from our visits on Shade St. Sorry to hear of his passing. At one time his older brother played baseball in our back yard on Middle St. I remember the small observatory in his back yard.

We share your loss. Peter was well ahead of his time way back in the '50 when we knew him in Lexington. Our best wishes
