CAROL PAUL Obituary

Paul, Carol Ann Of Newton, October 23rd after living with a stroke for more than 4 years. Carol Ann is survived by Joseph Rizza who was a consistently loving and supportive partner for a long time. Her memory is much cherished by children Max and Tara Paul of New York City and Gavin and Lia Paul of Scottsdale Arizona as well as Alex and Daniela Rizza. Her great strength and sense of humor live on in her beloved granddaughter Charlotte (Charley) Hillary. Carol Ann was born on January 6th, 1948 to James T. and Muriel Kernohan of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her loss is mourned by a sister Barbara and her husband Sidney Lowry, as well as a brother David Kernohan and his wife Geraldine. She is predeceased by sister Hillary and niece Amanda whose untimely deaths from a similar heart condition to Carol Ann's own inspired her courageous battle to overcome odds and live life to the fullest. She is adored by her many nieces and nephews as well as countless friends and co-workers. Carol Ann graduated from Keele University in Staffordshire, England with a degree in both Biology and Chemistry. Following graduation, she travelled to America, intent on new experience and adventure. A chance interview at Williams College in western Massachusetts triggered a life long career in the natural sciences. Her skills as a laboratory instructor and mentor, particularly in the Neuroscience Program at Wellesley College, will be remembered and valued by a generation of undergraduates. She served on the Editorial board of the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education and co-authored a definitive Neuroscience laboratory text Discovering Neurons. Her masters thesis, which found an association between brain size and alcohol consumption, spawned a scholarly paper and national recognition. In November of this year, Carol Ann will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience, an international organization that is focused on neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, November 1st at 11am in the Houghton Memorial Chapel, Wellesley College, 106 Central St., Wellesley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to The American Heart Assoc. www.heart.org or the American Stroke Assoc. www.strokeassociaton.org.
