RACHEL GOLDSTEIN Obituary

GOLDSTEIN, Rachel It is with great sadness and deep love that Rachel's family announces her passing at the age of sixty-eight, on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at home in Montreal, surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-eight years, Jim Elkind; her children, Aron Angel (Jane) of Los Angeles and Sally Goldstein-Elkind (Kevin) of Boston; her sisters, Rosie (Mark Hardy) and Adele (Ruby Friedman); and sister-in-law Carol Elkind. Rachel was the oldest daughter of the late Majer and the late Hala Goldstein, both Holocaust survivors. Rachel was born in a displaced person's camp in St. Ottilien, Germany. At the age of two, she moved to La Paz, Bolivia, with her parents. Five years later, in 1953 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal, where Rachel completed her education with a degree in English Literature (BA 1970) and a Diploma in Education in 1972, both from McGill University. In 1976, Rachel moved to Boston where she raised her children, studied communications, and worked for Facing History and Ourselves, an organization which builds curriculum and professional development for educators to teach about the Holocaust and genocide. Rachel and Jim moved to Montreal in the summer of 2014 to be closer to family as she struggled with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Rachel was a teacher, writer, artist, and published poet. She loved family, friends, words, witty repartee, and Jewish traditions. Special thanks to Rachel's ALS doctors and teams in both Boston (Dr. Seward Rutkove, Dr. Robert Thomas and the Beth Israel Hospital ALS Clinic) and Montreal (Dr. Angela Genge and the Neuro ALS Clinic), CLSC Metro, particularly Valerie Vachon, Respiratory Technician, and her caregivers Roseanne, Grace, Rhobie, Michelle, and Susan. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, Montreal on Tuesday, January 20 at 12 noon. Burial in Israel on Wednesday, January 21. Dear Jim and family: Rachel's loving spirit was a gift I shared in workshops for several years before moving away. Two years ago Rachel and I saw each other again while she was writing about ALS in her life. Again I was inspired by her indomitable and loving spirit. I want to think of her as always with you. And her beautiful writing is her gift of legacy. Lee Dunnew
