LARRY BENSON Obituary

BENSON, Larry Dean Of Lexington, Feb. 16, 2015. Husband of the late Margaret (Owens) Benson. Father of Cassandra Benson and her partner Mary-Alice Wells of Provincetown, MA, Amanda Benson of Brentwood, TN, Geoffrey Benson and his wife Nancy of Hampstead, NH, and the late Gavin Benson and his surviving wife Cindy of Londonderry, NH. Larry is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Jack, Owens, Eliot, Nicholas, Ryan, Riley, Samantha, Jacquelyn, Jessalyn, and Rachel, and by 1 great grandchild, Paxton. Larry Dean was a U.S. Marine Veteran, Korea. He received his Doctorate and became Professor of Medieval Literature at Harvard University for the next 45 years. He authored 21 books including King Arthur's Death. Larry enjoyed sabbaticals in Italy and summers at Lake Winnepesaukee sailing and relaxing with family. A funeral service will be held Saturday Feb. 21 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 929 Concord Turnpike in Arlington at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the National Parkinsons Foundation at www.parkinsons.org. Interment Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

It was a joy to know Larry during my years as a graduate student at Harvard; his encouragement, kindness, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to me, and I think of him all the time when teaching down here in Texas. He was a great teacher, an awesome writer, and his sense of fun is much missed.
