ROBERT W. WELCH Obituary
WELCH, Attorney Robert W. Late of Salem, Massachusetts and Marco Island, Florida, son of Attorney William B. and Anne Connolly Welch passed away on May 25,2015. He was married to Anne Marie Harvey Welch for fifty years. Bob was born in Salem and raised in Marblehead, attended Marblehead Public Schools and then attended St. John's Prep in Danvers. He went on to graduate from Boston College and Boston College Law School. During his school years, he was a launch driver for both the Eastern and Boston Yacht Club in addition to being a night watchman at the Boston Yacht Club. While in college he spent one summer as a social worker at Bedford Veteran's Administration Hospital in a locked women's veteran's ward. While he was in law school he did an internship with the Essex County District Attorney Patrick Shanahan Burke. He also worked in the summer in the clerk's office of Superior Court and in the Essex County Law Library. Upon graduation from Law School and while waiting to hear the results of the bar exam he served as personal assistant to State Auditor Thaddeus Buczko. Upon receiving the news that he successfully passed the bar, he left the State Auditor's Office and went into practice with his father William B. Welch in Salem, Massachusetts. At age 34 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Naumkeag Trust Company, its Executive Committee and served the Naumkeag Trust Company and Eastern Bank in various capacities for over 36 years. He was a Director of the Eastern Bank and Trust Company, a Corporator of Eastern Bank, Trustee of Eastern Bank, and a guest Director of Eastern Investments. Mr. Welch also taught Business Law at Salem State University. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Essex County and Salem Bar Associations, Massachusetts Conveyance Association, the National and Massachusetts Association of Elder Attorneys. He was a licensed real estate broker. He had been admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States. He has been appointed Clerk Magistrate Pro Temp of the first District Court of Essex on several occasions when there was a vacancy in the office of Clerk Magistrate. He assisted Oliver P. Killam in setting up the Killam Foundation which in the last few years has given millions of dollars in scholarships to graduates of Marblehead High School and money to the Children's room of the Abbot Public Library. He was a Eucharistic Minister for over 25 years at St. John's Church in Swampscott. He was a past Vice Commodore of the Wingaersheek Beach Yacht Club in Gloucester, a former member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, and the Clover Club of Boston. He has been a member of the Boston Yacht Club for over 40 years. He is survived by his three children, Robert W. Welch, II and Linn Taylor, ofNew Hampshire, Lisa Anne Dyer McCarthy and her husband Daniel, of Marblehead, Massachusetts and Christopher H. Welch and his wife Kathryn of Salem, Massachusetts. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Rory McCarthy, Robert Weston (Westy) McCarthy, and Lucy Welch. He is survived by two sisters, Patricia Davern of Salem, Massachusetts and Nancy Ryan of Marblehead, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his two brothers William and Richard Welch and his granddaughter Maeve Grace Welch. He also leaves his loyal paralegal of 45 years, Joanne Knight, many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law. A wake will be held Thursday, May 28, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 174 Humphrey St. in Swampscott from 4-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Friday May 29, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott at 10:30 am with a reception immediately following at the Hawthorne Hotel, 18 Washington Square West in Salem.
