Obituary Condolences

LAMONT, Austin Peacefully on Saturday, age 79, of Belmont and formerly of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Brother of Lavinia Rosenthal, Nicholas Lamont, and Nancy Sullivan. Father of Carrie, Helen, Owen and Nathan Lamont, eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins, formerly married to Sarah Newcomb and to Pamela Emerson. Austin Lamont was born in Baltimore and graduated from Oberlin College in 1960 and from Boston University in 1962. He worked in documentary film production in the Boston area until he left to teach at Ohio University from 1967-69; he produced Film Comment magazine from 1968-73, co-founded Boston Film/Video Foundation in 1971 and co-produced "Conversations with Willard Van Dyke" in 1981. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1984 where he became an expert on Western art photography, in which capacity he worked with the Andrew Smith Gallery from 1994-2004. He returned to the Boston area in 2006 to be closer to his extended family. A memorial service is planned for early in June.
