PETER HUGHES RICHARDSON

1924 - 2016

PETER RICHARDSON Obituary

RICHARDSON, Peter Hughes Of Exeter, New Hampshire, formerly of Weston, Massachusetts, passed suddenly on March 12, 2016. Born on May 28, 1924 in Boston, Richardson grew up in Concord, Massachusetts and graduated from MIT in 1948 after service in the paratroopers in France in 1945. He taught science and math in high school (and built a ski jump) until he was recruited back to the MIT Admissions Office in 1964. He became the Director in 1972 and served in that role until he retired in 1984. Then, he directed the Admissions Office at the Vermont Law School for three years. In the subsequent decades he translated his lifelong love of the outdoors and determination to leave his global campsite better than he found it into activities too numerous to count but which include the Connecticut River Watershed Council, the Appalachian Trail Conference, and the Exeter Conservation Commission. He also created a trail in the woods around his retirement community in Exeter that was named Pete's Way in a ceremony in 2013. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Corinne (Keenie) Smith Richardson and his children Marcie, Chris, Peter, and John. He adored his 12 grandchildren most of whom he took hiking and taught to ski. And then there are the 10 great grandchildren who enriched his final years. He was predeceased by his son Charley. If you choose to, please send memorial donations to either Earth Justice or the Appalachian Mountain Club. A celebration of Pete's life will be held in the upcoming weeks.

I was pleasantly surprised and very touched when Pete came to my brother, Jo Joline's Celebration of Life last Sept. And now am deeply saddened to hear of his sudden passing. Memories of Pomfret are flooding back. Quite a man, a life to be emulated! Thoughts and prayers for all of you.

My memories of Pete here at Riverwoods in Exeter, NH was that of laughter, wonderful conversations and sometimes tears.

His warm caring personality was so obvious. And every day I saw Pete he was going out to do something to make this earth a better place

One of my children passed away and Pete came over to me and just looked at me with tears in his eyes. He knew my pain and no words were needed.

I will miss this wonderful human being. He stood so tall among us..

RIP my dear friend and say Hi to Nikki

Peter and I started at Vermont Law School at the same time - 1984. He knew so much about admissions and was the consummate professional. I suspect he worked for the love of the school, as I bet his retirement from MIT would have been higher than his salary from VLS was. He made me laugh every day, and helped us all keep our perspective in the early days of building a world class environmental law school. He even persuaded Keenie to help me in the Office of Career Services. I know I am one voice of thousands who will always remember him with love and gratitude.

Peter joined my father, two other friends and me on a three-week trip to the Arctic in 1981. He was a fantastic companion, guide, naturalist and comedian during the adventure. I'm smiling just thinking of the wonderful times we shared.

We were in our 50s when our paths first crossed, working at MIT and serving on the Council of the Appalachian Mountain Club, but what a pile of memories we have accumulated since then! My friend, you left us too soon, and will be greatly missed.
