HENRY MARKOWITZ Obituary

MARKOWITZ, Dr. Henry Dr. Henry Joel Markowitz died peacefully on Friday, September 29 in Albany, California. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Susan Markowitz, by his sister Faye-Ann Markowitz-D'Elia, his children Steven, Devora and Beth, his son-in-law John Anner (married to Devora), and his grandchildren Eva, Zelie and Sophia Anner. Henry was born on July 17, 1937 to Maurice and Eva Markowitz. He grew up in Roxbury and Mattapan, and later moved to Sharon, Mass. He attended Boys Latin School in Boston, and graduated from Boston University and Tufts Dental School. For nearly fifty years, he practiced dentistry in his home, and was later a professor at Tufts Dental School where he pioneered techniques for digital imaging. A veteran of the US armed service, Henry served as a captain and dentist in the Army in Fort Riley, Kansas. His father was a butcher, and after the family moved to Sharon he opened a store called Towne Market, where Henry worked alongside his mother, father and sister. It was while working at Towne Market that he met the love of his life, Susan, walking along a road as he drove the delivery truck. Lost (or so he always claimed), he stopped to ask for directions, and one thing led to another. They were married on January 27th, 1960. When their children were little, Henry and Susan decided to put family time first, and so Henry frequently closed his business in the summers to travel across North America in a camper van, the three kids nestled among sleeping bags and comic books in the back. Together they drove, camped, slept under the stars and made dozens of new friends. After retiring, he and Susan moved to California to be near their children and grandchildren, each of whom Henry adored. Henry was known for his love of travel, the pleasure he took in meals with his family and friends, his beautiful smile, and for being a great dentist. He enjoyed life to the fullest, whether sunning on a beach in Jamaica with his sister, skiing in Vermont, touring Vietnam or going on a walk with his granddaughters. Loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and dear friend. Henry was all of these things, and so much more. Henry was a lifelong friend to people he met as a young man and throughout his life. Most of all, he was a loving and generous man who cared for his family. May he rest in peace. The burial service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon Mass, at 12:45pm on Friday, October 13. A celebration of Henry's life will follow at the home of Ken and Ruth Weiner, 1267 Bay Road, Sharon. Please park on the side of the house on Chessman Drive. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Schlossberg Memorial Chapel "Family Owned" 781 828-6990

I'm going through Frayda Rosenblatt's emails. She was sent this reminder because she'd left a comment here. I'm feeling compelled to write this because it seems that she and Henry have died on the same day, September 29th. Of course, he in 2017 whereas Mum just died a few weeks ago, 2024. It'll be quite easy to remember Henry from now on when I light a yahrzeit candle.

I remember him well from Tufts Dental School. My husband Ron Resnick was a member of his class. We once bumped into each other in San Fransisco when we were traveling. I understand your many years together because Ron and were together until 4 years ago. Sending sympathy and hugs.

Heartfelt condolences to Susan and family. Henry and I have been friends since about 1953. We were part of a very close group of girls and guys that spent most of our free time together. Talking, laughing, dancing, and always more laughing. Henry was a special boy and then man...such wonderful memories. RIP

Henry was my dentist for 40 or so years. I even traveled back to Sharon to go to him 3-4 times a year rather than go to another dentist. A wonderful, kind man. Missed him SO much when he retired.
My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Oh,what a loss. I was 14 years old living on Clarkwood St. when I had a crush on the cute boy next door. On to the 1950's in Sharon where I would shop at the meat market. Each item trimmed and packaged to perfection. Henry brought that training to his dental practice. Always meticulous. I not only bought the meat from Morey, but prepared it for Henry to eat when he baby sat my kids. I would joke with him as to the fact that my relationship with him lasted longer than my marriage. He said he often heard that. What words of comfort can I offer to you when I am having a hard time comforting myself? How fortunate for all of us that we had him in our lives. Frayda

Henry and I were very close friends during our teenage years in Mattapan. We used to joke that while most of our friends were Russian Jews, Henry, Fred Mesnick, and I were the only Polish Jews in our crowd. Now, both of them are gone and I'm heartsick. Susan and Fay Ann, Marcia and I send our deepest condolences to you and your entire family.
Most sincerely,
Marcia and Harvey Vetstein.

The obituary notice says it all perfectly. Henry started being my friend through a common friend Ricky, 49 years ago. And, along the way we worked together at summer camp and he allowed me to be his patient as well. I'm so glad I got to visit with him and Susan a few years ago .

Condolences to you all.
