SMITH Robert J. “Bob”, 71, died on September 4, 2013 at Newton Wellesley Hospital after a second tough fight against cancer. Bob was born on September 30, 1941 in Worcester and grew up in Dover. As a child he enjoyed skating at Channing Pond and playing little league with his classmates, many of whom remain lifelong friends. Bob graduated from Needham High School in 1959 and from Boston University in 1963. While at BU, Bob was a two-year captain of the Boston University hockey team and has remained a life-long fan of the BU Hockey program. Bob also enjoyed playing semi-pro hockey for the Walpole Sweepers. Bob worked in the real estate industry for many years as a real estate appraiser, a broker, and in commercial lending. He coached youth hockey for several years for the Needham Rockets. Most recently, Bob worked at ADESA in Framingham and “chauffeured” his grandchildren to sports and dance practices. Special thanks are extended to the doctors, nurses and staff at Newton Wellesley Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital for their professional treatment and compassionate care. Son of the late John and Anna (Kerr) Smith, both originally from Ireland, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Jeff Anderson of Medfield; his son and daughter-in-law, Judd and Tina Smith of Winthrop; his sister Ann Smith of Essex; his former wife Jacey MacAlpine of Yarmouthport; his grandchildren, Emma and Kate Anderson of Medfield, and Donovan and Alexis Smith of Winthrop; and many dear and loyal friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at The Dover Church, 17 Springdale Avenue, Dover. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Dover Church (thedoverchurch.org) or World Vision (worldvision.org).
