DOWNING Allan Downing, longtime resident of Needham, MA, died in his sleep on July 7th. He was 81 years old. Born in Worcester, MA to Olive (Stevens) Downing and Donald Downing, Allan graduated from Worcester High School and went on to earn his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He spent the next 22 years working as an Art Director for Donnelly Outdoor Advertising in Jamaica Plain and as of 1997 was claimed to have designed more billboards than anyone else in the country. He went on to be self-employed in advertising design for many years before retiring. Allan was well known for his love of photography and was rarely out and about without his camera in hand. He also had a great interest in classic cars and enjoyed outings with his family to car shows and races. He enjoyed reading about World War II and had a vast knowledge of World War II aircraft. Allan’s greatest love was for his family and he delighted in visiting with his grandchildren who brought him his most joy. He will always be remembered for his kind heart, warm smile, and his love of a good laugh. Allan is survived by his Aunt Dorothy (Downing) Quimby of Auburn, his children Steven Downing of Marston‘s Mills, David Downing of Needham, Allan Downing of Medfield, Kristy Downing-Oteri of Sherborn, their respective spouses, and nine grandchildren.
