PARMENTER Antonie (Ann) Parmenter, 72, died at home in West Newton, 30 July, 2012 from after-effects of a stroke. Mrs. Parmenter was a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) who worked with agencies in Watertown, Waltham, Wayland, and Natick before starting her private practice in West Newton in 1997. She specialized in depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. She was a founding board member of SMART Recovery, a secular addiction program, and was one of its first facilitators. The group's chairman, Dr. Joseph Gerstein, said, "Ann Parmenter was the first mental health professional in Massachusetts to recognize the need for and the value of the SMART Recovery. Since then there have been more than 19,000 meetings in the state and thousands more around the world." She was born of Norwegian and Swedish immigrant parents in Terre Haute, IN, and grew up in Marshall, IL. She had an M.S.W. degree from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work (1978) and a BS from Purdue University (1962). She is survived by her husband, Tom Parmenter, a retired technical writer. They marked their 50th wedding anniversary last week. She is also survived by her sister Sonja Raymond of Missasauga, Ontario, Canada; son, David W. Parmenter of Newton Corner, MA, his wife, Jennifer, and three grandchildren, Lily, Madeleine, and Juliette Parmenter; son, Daniel C. Parmenter, of Ridgewood, Queens, New York City, his wife, Ying-Huei Wu. Memorial gathering in her home in West Newton, Saturday, 4 August at 2:00 P.M., 30 Perkins Street, West Newton.
