VAN TASSELL Bernard E., of Houghs Neck, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family on Wednesday, August 7, 2013. Bernie attended St. Ambrose Grammar School in Dorchester, and Cathedral High School in Boston. Upon graduation he served with honor in the United States Navy. Several years after he was discharged, he entered the Submarine Sandwich business. Eventually he went on to own Bernie’s Take Out on Bedford Street, in downtown Boston. His next venture was Ann’s Submarine Sandwiches on Needham Street, in Newton. After Newton he went on to own Bernie’s General and The Manet Lunch in the Hough’s Neck section of Quincy. After many successful years as a business and family man, he retired to Cape Coral, Florida. Bernie’s only passion wasn’t just work. He enjoyed playing softball with friends and coworkers for as long as he could swing a bat. In his earlier years he served as president of the King Square Athletic Association, which helped field a competitive softball team in the Dorchester area. He went on to play in Hough’s Neck and Cape Coral. In addition, Bernie became a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Elks and the Quincy Yacht Club. Most significantly, Bernie was a kind and generous friend and dedicated family man. He reached out to help many people in his life in as many ways as a man could. He was a trusted listener and made himself available to discuss problems and concerns. All of us who loved Bernie as a father, brother, grandfather, husband, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend will endeavor to keep his memory alive. He is both sorely missed and fondly remembered. The beloved husband of the late Rosemary N. (Bushman) Van Tassell, he is survived by his devoted children; Lisa A. Keenan and her husband, James, Michael R., Bernard E., Jr. and his wife, Kristen, and Thomas B. Van Tassell, all of Houghs Neck, his cherished grandchildren; Rosemary, Emily, Bernard, III, Hayley, James, Jr. and Maximus, his sister and brothers; Theresa “Terry” Lennon of Hingham, Robert F. of Braintree and Arthur E. Van Tassell of NH. He was the brother of the late Elaine Riley. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Quincy, Monday, August 19, at 10:00 A.M. Visiting hours omitted. Interment private. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to Old Colony Hospice, One Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368. www.alfreddthomas.com Alfred D.
