TROY Catherine Ellen (nee Banfield) died peacefully on September 10, 2015, after a decade-long courageous fight with breast and pancreatic cancer. Cathy was the beloved wife of Paul and the adoring mother of Owen and his wife Jill of Andover and Danielle and her fiance Donald Voorhees of Somerville. She was the dear sister of Bernadette Keilty and family of Peabody. Catherine was also the cherished MeMa of Dylan, Devin Rose, Tatum, and Sophie. Her parents Timothy J. and Catherine Banfield and brother Timothy Banfield predecease her. Cathy was born on October 10, 1946 in Somerville. She grew up as the middle child in a devoted family centered on faith and hard work. She attended Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston and worked at Filene’s Basement, Boston Edison, and the MBTA before starting a family. On September 25, 1971, she married her irascible sweetheart, Paul Troy from Charlestown. She and Paul moved from her grandparent’s home in 1974 to North Billerica, where she was a homemaker and mother to son Owen and daughter Danielle. A dedicated dance and hockey mom, she devoted her energies to her children and her treasured nieces and nephews. She created a welcoming and safe home for all of her children’s friends and the kids of the close-knit neighborhood of Treble Cove Road. She upheld every custom and holiday tradition, baked everyone’s favorite meatballs when requested, and knew every problem could be solved with a long chat and a hot cup of tea. Once the children were off to life adventures, she took a position in logistics at Bay Networks and then Nortel Networks in Billerica. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and fought bravely through debilitating treatments, all the while nursing her parents and marrying off her son. Her life was re-energized with the birth of her three granddaughters who cherished their MeMa and all the gifts and kind attention she showered on them. The arrival of grandniece Sophie in 2013 brightened her final years. Her large circle of friends from all points of her life will miss her humor and generosity of spirit. She will be remembered as an avid shopper, a skilled home decorator, a scrappy problem-solver, and a phenomenal dancer. The funeral procession will be held from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) in SOMERVILLE on Friday morning, September 18, 2015, at 9:00A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Benedict Church in Somerville at 10:00A.M. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 4:00P.M. 8:00P.M. Interment will be at Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge. The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at Dana Farber for their dedication and especially the staff at the Kaplan House for their compassionate and loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the “Kaplan Family Hospice House,” 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923. For information please visit www.dohertyfuneralservice.com
