Elizabeth Cole


Elizabeth "Betty" Sweetser (Harrington) Cole, 101, of Hingham, passed away on September 30, 2015

surrounded by family.

Born in Durham, Maine on May 19, 1914, she later graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn,

Maine and obtained a two-year teaching certificate in 1933 from the former Farmington Normal School

(University of Maine). Elizabeth taught in Maine elementary schools until 1938 and then attended the

Auburn Maine School of Commerce. After receiving her secretarial degree, Elizabeth became secretary

to the treasurer of the Continental Mills located in Lewiston, Maine.

Much later, after moving to Hingham, Massachusetts, Elizabeth attended Bridgewater State College and

received her BSE in 1966 and then returned to teaching. She was an elementary teacher in the Rockland

Public School System for many years.

Elizabeth was a member of several patriotic societies: Mass Society of Mayflower Descendants,

Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America (DFPA) and the Daughters of the American Revolution

(DAR). She was a descendant of Richard Warren, William Brewster of the Mayflower, as well as Richard

Stubbs who was one of the founders of Hull, MA. It was from the Richard Stubbs relationship that she

served as a liaison between Portland, Maine and Hull at their reunion on several occasions.

She was a member of the Hingham Historical Society, the Hingham Garden Club, Hingham Yacht Club,

Cohasset Golf Club. In her younger days, she prided herself with raising Championship Rhode Island

Red chickens through her 4-H Club.

Elizabeth was a former volunteer at the South Shore Science Center and the Hingham Visiting Nurse

Association. More recently she was a member of the OPALS, a choral group who performed at nursing

homes on the South Shore.

Her interests included gardening, bridge, Scrabble and music. She was an ardent Red Sox fan.

She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Morton Cole and grandson Adam Gildersleeve and is

survived by two daughters (Mary Anderson of Halifax, MA and Susan Gildersleeve of Bradford, NH), four

grandchildren (Paul Gildersleeve, Chuck Anderson, John Anderson and Katherine Smith), six great

grandchildren and several nieces and nephews .

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 1 pm at Downing Cottage Funeral

Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham, MA 02043. The interment will be private.
