RYAN John “Bud”, 94, of Needham and Brewster, MA died on January 27, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Helen (Judge) Ryan. He leaves five daughters, Mary Pat Joy and her husband Bill of Wellesley, Ellie Devlin of Needham, Maureen Guerry and her husband Pem of Chattanooga, TN, Susan O’Toole and her husband Preston of Walpole and Christine McCarthy and her husband Sean of Southboro; two sons, John Ryan, Jr and his wife Barbara of Sudbury, and Tom Ryan and his wife Patti of Holden. He also leaves a sister, Claire Nead and her husband Harry of Banning, CA, as well as seventeen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also, he is predeceased by his daughter Jean Ryan and his sisters Marjorie Zopf and Elinor Ryan. Bud was born in Brighton, MA on February 15, 1919, the son of the late John and Margaret (Dennis) Ryan. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1937 and the College of the Holy Cross in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India theatre during WWII. After the war, he returned to Brighton and became a partner with his sister Elinor in the John J. Ryan Insurance Agency, established by their father in 1922. Together they ran the agency until they both retired in December 1999. Bud married Helen Judge of Brockton in 1946 and they moved to Needham in 1953. He was active in the town, serving on the Needham School Committee from 1962-1971, as a town meeting member for 35 years, and on various town committees. He and Helen were active parishioners of St. Joseph Church. Bud was active with Holy Cross College, serving as the 1941 Class Chair for 45 years, and was past president of the Varsity Club and the Holy Cross Alumni Association. In 1971 he was the recipient of the In Hoc Signo Award, the Alumni Association’s highest honor. The “Bud Ryan Room” in the Hart Center was dedicated in recognition to his service to his class and Holy Cross during his 40th Reunion. He was also active with the BC High Alumni Association, the HC Club of Boston and Blessed John XXIII National Seminary. He served on the boards of Mount St. Joseph Academy and Regis College. He was a long-time member of the President’s Council at three colleges: Holy Cross, Regis and Assumption College. He and Helen were members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Bud was an active member of the Brighton business community, serving on the Brighton Board of Trade for many years and on the board of the former Brighton Cooperative Bank. He was a past president of the bank. Along with his wife and extended family, Bud’s greatest loves were his Catholic faith, Holy Cross, Ireland and Cape Cod. He spent the summers of his youth in Centerville. He and Helen bought a cottage in Brewster in 1952 and he loved every summer he spent there for the next 61 years. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 1, at 10:00 A.M. in St. Joseph Church 1360 Highland Street, Needham, MA. Calling hours will be held Friday, January 31, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Avenue, NEEDHAM, MA.
