TURCHINETZ Bill (William Ernest), of Cambridge, Lexington and Truro passed away January 27, 2014, peacefully at home with his loved ones by his side. Loving father, husband, grandfather and brother. Husband of the late Ei Tenoski Turchinetz, father of Tildy and Mimi, grandfather of Thea. Son of the late Annie Patrick Turchinetz and Michael Turchinetz of Winnipeg Manitoba, brother of Albert and Richard and the late Muriel Wilkinson of Canada. Bill was born in Winnipeg in 1928 and received his PHD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Winnipeg at Manitoba. He was accepted as a Fellow at the School of Physics at the Australian National University where he joined a prestigious international team of research physicists. He arrived in Boston in the late 1950's where he commenced a life-long career on the faculty of MIT as a particle physicist. Passionate and kind, with a sharp wit, Dr. Turchinetz was a mentor and friend to many and often sought out for his keen problem solving capacity. He built the William H. Bates Linear Accelerator in collaboration with international leaders in the physics community and spent many years contributing through cutting edge research and as the Associate Director. A strong advocate for justice, Bill worked in the civil rights and anti-war movements. A Memorial Service will be held on March 29, 2014 at the MIT Memorial Chapel.
