DOHERTY Patricia Ann (Collins), of Arlington, MA, the last in a line of local baseball royalty, passed away March 19, 2012 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham, MA. She was 89 and had battled Alzheimer's disease for the past eight years. Mrs. Doherty, the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Doyle) and John "Shano" Collins-the last Boston-born Boston Red Sox manager for two seasons from 1930-1931 and a player for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox from 1910 to 1925. Mother of Ellen Steeby and her husband James of Jackson, Mississippi, and William Doherty and his wife Marjorie, of North Andover, MA. Grandmother of Elizabeth Steeby of New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the wife of the late William F. Doherty of Arlington and had four siblings; Virginia, Eleanor, Robert and William. Born in Pittsfield, MA and raised in Newton, MA before living in Arlington for over 50 years, Mrs. Doherty worked at the former James Lawrence & Company on Batterymarch Street. in Boston and subsequently as a medical secretary. She was a fan of baseball, Northeastern University hockey, the television show Wheel of Fortune, and most of all crossword puzzles, and art she inherited from her Charlestown-raised father, who, she often pointed out, educated himself through that genre as a train-riding professional baseball teammate of Shoeless Joe Jackon, Buck Weaver, and others.
