Hugo Thomas Fagrelius passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 29, 2012. Tom was born on May 22, 1923, to Beatrice and Hugo Fagrelius in Montrose, Colo. His sister, Jacquie, was born two years later.
The family moved to Greeley, Colo., and on to Great Falls. Tom grew up with a love for swimming, the outdoors and Boy Scouts. One of his proudest accomplishments was achieving the rank of Eagle Scout as an adolescent.
Tom served in the Army
during World War II
, stateside and overseas. When discharged, he returned home to study civil engineering at Montana State College, join the Sigma Chi fraternity and marry Frances Teslow, the love of his life. They enjoyed 64 blessed years of marriage.
During his 35-year tenure with Mountain Bell and AT&T, he was fortunate to have been able to spend a year working on the DEW line in the Arctic. His work took him from Helena to Great Falls, New York City, Denver and back to Helena.
His love of the outdoors laid the foundation from which he lived his life. Hiking, backpacking, boating, skiing, canoeing, fishing, hunting and tennis were his favorite activities, all of which he passed on to his children. He was well-known for his woodworking skills. He traveled the world and enjoyed reading.
He was a loyal friend, a strong father and a man who appreciated the value of lifelong learning. He spent many happy hours at his cabins on Seeley Lake and up the Gallatin Canyon. His black Labradors were his constant companions.
Tom is survived by his wife, Frances Fagrelius; his children, Linda (Clark) Babcock, Kristy (Paul) McVey, Kurt (Maryann) Fagrelius and Eric (Phylis) Fagrelius; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His parents and one grandson, Leif Babcock, preceded him in death.
The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas of Helena, Dr. K. May and the staff of the Bozeman Cancer Treatment Center and the staff at Highgate Senior Living for their compassionate and respectful care.
A graveside internment will take place in June. Memorials may be made in Tom's name to Special Olympics Montana, PO Box 3507, Great Falls 59403.
