Joseph P. "Pete" Malin(1940 - 2008)

Joseph Peter Malin passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday Oct. 11, 2008.

Pete was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Bozeman to Joseph and Irene (Jensen) Malin. He graduated from Holy Rosary in Bozeman in 1958. He attended Carroll College in Helena, and before he graduated he proudly joined the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge he finished his schooling and graduated from Carroll College.

Pete was married for a brief period, and during this time he adopted his son, John, whom he very proudly raised as a single parent.

Pete's business career started as a teacher in Clancy, then he worked for a period of time as veterans representative for the employment office in Helena. Most of his career was with the statistics section of the labor department for the state of Montana, retiring in 1991. Since his retirement he has been a teacher at St. Andrews school in Helena. He was brilliant in math and tutored gifted students in math and science.

Pete was a devout Catholic attending daily Mass. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, serving as state deputy and many other offices. Pete was very active in the Coursillo movement serving as rector for the Men's Coursillo. He served in many positions on the team and was always willing to help wherever he was needed. He was very active in his parish at the cathedral, as lector, Eucharistic minister and greeter. He led the Rosary every Saturday morning and was "right-hand man" to the priests at the cathedral.

Pete loved his extended family and tried to make it to all the family gatherings. He had many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly and was very active in their lives.

Pete and his beloved Mary Florence spent much time together. They enjoyed life, especially their church and family and their friends. They worked well together, especially when life was "under construction."

Everyone, especially his family, knew Pete was the "go-to man" when anything needed to be done. He will be greatly missed by his family. He was a dear dad, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived his son, John; his beloved, Mary Florence and her sons, Josh of Helena and Jason of Maryland; brothers and sisters, Cathy (Dan) Dinsdale of Livingston, Michael (Barbara) Malin of Occidental, Calif., Bernadine (Scott) Warwood of Bozeman;. Leonard (Johnnon) Malin of Billings, Jim (Kim) Malin of Sheridan, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, Joe and Irene (Jensen) Malin; stepmother, Riki (VanHoudt) Malin; uncle, the Rev. Leonard Jensen; sister, Patricia Mader; and nephew, Robert Mader.

A Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Retz Funeral Home in Helena. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Helena Cathedral in Helena at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, followed immediately by burial in Resurrection Cemetery.
