John Neuman Obituary

John F. Neuman, 68, died unexpectedly on Feb. 20, 2011, after a short illness.

John was born April 3, 1942, in Helena, the eldest child of Dr. and Mrs. (Lee Riley) E.W. Neuman. He attended St. Helena's Grade School and Helena Cathedral High School, and graduated with honors in chemistry from Carroll College in Helena. John attended graduate school at Washington State University and spent his entire professional career as an analytical chemist.

He worked for the USDA laboratory in Wenatchee, Wash., and with private laboratories in Colorado. John moved to Bozeman in 1981 and found employment with the Montana Department of Agriculture laboratory, and later with the Montana State University's Fisheries Bioassay Laboratory. He was the long-time laboratory manager for the Center for BioFilm Engineering at MSU until he retired in 2009.

John was a mentor to students learning the science and art of analytical chemistry. He always was a strict disciplinarian for laboratory safety and the creation of high-quality data. He was respected by his peers, students and faculty at the BioFilm Center and by the other science and engineering departments at MSU.

John was an enthusiastic downhill skier, a racer in his early days, and a powder hound enjoying helicopter skiing in Canada and Wyoming. He climbed all the big peaks in Washington's Cascade Mountains. His summers were spent fishing on the Madison, Yellowstone and Gallatin rivers. His unique driftboat was a familiar sight and known to many fishers on these rivers from April through September.

John was a great teacher, whether explaining a calculus problem, showing how to cast a #16 dry fly to a rising fish with a delicate touch, or demonstrating smooth carved turns on the slopes of Bridger Bowl. He passed on his skills and knowledge to his friends and neighbors, and especially to his nephews and nieces. He was always the first to help and stayed to the last to make sure all turned out well. These traits were first learned as an altar boy, choirboy, and as an Eagle Scout. He was generous to a fault.

He will be remembered with affection for his intense love of life, his service to others, and his curmudgeon's wit.

He is survived by brothers, Edward and Dennis; sisters-in-law, Bernadette, Marilyn and Deborah; and brother-in-law, Stephen; his nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Alicia Lee, Katie, Matthew, Elizabeth and Paul; and Connolly cousins.

John was the special uncle, and he loved his nieces and nephews as though each was his very own, and they, like his whole family, loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Helen Neuman Lane; his brother, Michael Neuman; dear aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial for John will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection Parish in Bozeman, with a luncheon to follow.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Dr. E.W. Neuman Scholarship Foundation, Carroll College, Helena, MT; or to the Center for BioFilm Engineering at Montana State University.

To all who were close to John,

I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was one of a kind...intelligent, wry, generous, warm, persistent, and dedicated to his family. My thoughts are with you.

To the Neuman family, friends, and co-workers of John. I was shocked and very saddened to hear about John. He was a friend and a mentor-- in chemistry and in skiing! We saw him just this past Christmas when we were back in Bozeman and he seemed excited to be moving on to the next phase of his life. I will forever miss that gruff voice and demeanor through which shined a heart of gold.

To the Neuman Family, I am so sorry to learn of Johns passing. I had the very good fortune of knowing John through fly fishing. He was a regular in my fly shop and I knew whenever John came through the door that we would share a good laugh and gripe about something. The last time I saw John was on the Yellowstone River after a days float. I hadn't seen him in a year and it was like a reunion of sorts. Laughs were shared and there was a wonderful sense of friendship the the fly fishing fraternity embodies. I will miss John and I know that his spirit will forever be a part of me. I hope he took his fly rod with him.

Ed, Even though I hadn't met John, my condolences and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Take care, and I hope to see you when we return to Bozeman. Joan Davies

To the entire Neuman family, my deepest sympathy. John was a very special friend for over 40 years. I had the pleasure of seeing him every year on my trips through Bozeman. We shared many ski adventures and trips through Yellowstone. I will be in Bozeman in the next few weeks and it will be impossible to be there and not see him. My wonderful friend Neuman is gone and I will miss him forever.

I was very shocked and saddened by the news of John's sudden passing. Here at Medical Associates he is missed by receptionists, lab personel, doctors, and nurses alike. I, personally, miss him very much as a friend and a patient and will always remember him with a smile.

John was such a wonderful teacher, co-worker, mentor and most of all friend. We had so many laughs together and the students always enjoyed a good practical joke with John. One time Alex went in the carnival dunk tank in his lab coat and came back to the lab and told John that he had pulled the emergency shower and water was all over the place. John just about hit the ceiling until he realized that it was a joke! We all had a good laugh and he declared war on us! We had many good times at Specs and John always had some pieces of wisdom to share. I wish we had been able to visit with him last time we were in Bozeman. He will be missed greatly and will always be in our hearts. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

As the CBE Accounting Analyst, I worked with John for 10 years. He became a great friend. I most appreciated his loyalty, helpfulness and outstanding sense of humor. We shared many great laughs. I feel your loss. My husband Lloyd from Facilities Services worked closely with John addressing CBE laboratory refrigeration needs. He enjoyed John’s company and considered him friend. We scheduled a burger & beer meeting with John at Spectator’s, but took a rain check because he was not feeling well. It is a horrible shock to learn of his passing. Lloyd and I will miss him forever.
Sincere Condolences to John’s family from Lloyd & Margie Hansen
