Alice "Evelyn" Petersen, 91, of Bozeman passed away March 3, 2014, at Spring Creek Inn in Bozeman.
The Guest Book is expired.
Evelyn was born June 22, 1922, near Burlington, N.D., to Edward and Emilie Ziebarth. She was the youngest of a large family of four boys and three girls. Evelyn grew up on a rural farm in North Dakota where she learned all things related to farm life and homemaking. She attended Burlington High School and later Minot State Teacher's College as well as Montana State University in Bozeman where she earned her bachelor's degree.
On June 20, 1947, she married Donald Petersen, with whom she shared many worthwhile and joyful memories. They had one son together, David.
Evelyn had an innate nurturing and strong presence wherever she went, and had many jobs throughout her full lifetime. She was a factory worker during the war effort, while attending college she worked in a department store, and she was a wonderful wife and homemaker. Yet her proudest career achievement, after graduating from college, was being a 5th grade elementary school teacher for 35 years in Manhattan, Mont., where she retired in 1982. Evelyn made a long-lasting impression on many students, whom boast her qualities to this day. She was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award for excellence in education.
After retirement, Evelyn was active in the Retired Teachers Association, First Lutheran Church's Missions and World Relief, NW Neighborhood efforts, served as a polling/voting judge and volunteered at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. She enjoyed golf, canning, crocheting, tatting, quilting, sewing, crossword puzzles and gardening. Evelyn was never too busy to read an interesting newspaper article, help a friend or enjoy a lively conversation.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her son, David; and two grandchildren, Matthew Petersen and Bethany (Petersen) Richter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Bozeman.
