Bruce Ellsworth Sigrist passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton. Born on Nov. 8, 1926 in Akron, Ohio, Bruce got his first taste of the national parks during his high school summers when he worked in Olympic National Park with his sister, Margaret. After high school he spent winters at Ohio State University and summers in Yellowstone Park before serving honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Back in the states, Bruce spent a winter at the newly established Big Bend National Park in Texas and learned to love the desert and its warm climate. Bruce went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University, and later a master's from Arizona State. Over his long career, Bruce touched the lives of many people with his quick wit and easy smile. He married and started his family while working for the Yellowstone Park Company in the summer and teaching during the school year in Scottsdale, Ariz. He moved the family to Minnesota and managed Madden's Inn for many years, eventually becoming president of the Minnesota Resort Association. Bruce finished his career back at Yellowstone National Park as vice president for Hamilton's Stores before retiring to the Big Bend country of West Texas.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Zola; his daughter, Lori Sue Sigrist; his sister, Margaret Nelson and his brothers, John, Dick, Ed, and Bob Sigrist.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Sigrist of Alpine, Texas; his son, Brandon T. Sigrist and wife, Natascha of St. Paul, Minn.; and his daughter, Joni Dawn Sigrist of Gardiner, Mont.
