Joe Eagle was born on April 13, 1924, in Bozeman, the 9th of 10 children born to Sam and Ida Eagle. He passed away at age 89 on June 7, 2013, with his daughters by his side.

Growing up, his summers were spent in West Yellowstone and his school years in Bozeman, where he graduated from Gallatin County High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the 440th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Company. He returned to Bozeman to complete a degree in civil engineering from Montana State College.

Soon after college, he moved to West Yellowstone to assist in managing the family business, Eagle's Store. He loved the store and even after he cut back at work he still was there most days. On Nov. 20, 1957, he married Kay Lutton, whom he met while she was working summers at the Union Pacific Dining Lodge in West Yellowstone.

Joe loved the outdoors and spent many happy days hiking, fishing, camping, skiing and especially riding horses in the hills. He believed in the importance of giving back to his community, volunteering with many organizations over the years. He was a long-time member of the town's Planning and Zoning Board and actively involved with the American Legion and Community Protestant Church.

He was a loving husband and father who will be greatly missed by his wife, Kay, and daughters, Karen and Linda. Other family members include Kevin Buda, sisters-in-law, Margaret and Frankie Eagle, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Community Protestant Church, 505 N. Electric, West Yellowstone.

Memorial donations may be made to The Yellowstone Historic Center, P.O. Box 1299, West Yellowstone, MT 59758 or Eagle Mount, 6901 Goldenstein Ln., Bozeman, MT 59715 or an organization of your choice.
