After college, she worked for a short time for Sen. Mike Mansfield's campaign in Butte. Then she began her teaching career in Boulder, Mont., before transferring to the Butte school system. There she spent almost 30 years teaching special education.
She met the love of her life, Robert Beery, in 1950. They were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in July, 1954 and settled in Butte. She took a hiatus from working to raise their family of seven children. She was a nurturing mother; cooking, sewing clothes, chauffeuring, and participating in all aspects of her children's activities. Mary and Bob enjoyed 55 years of marriage and left a legacy of love and family commitment to all they knew.
Mary was actively involved in many community groups. Among them the Copper City Women's Club, General Federation of Women's Club, Pinochle Club, and the Butte Central High School Alumni Club. She was involved in the Special Olympics on a yearly basis, and was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Her hobbies included: bowling, skiing, knitting, gardening, reading, doing crosswords and puzzles, camping, socializing, and spending time with her family and friends.
Throughout her life, Mary and Robert were avid travelers. They took many vacations centered around visiting family, children, and grandchildren. They would never say no to a trip to Nevada for some casino fun.
Mary spent the last nine months of her life at the Bozeman Lodge. She enjoyed making new friends and participating in many of the activities there. She also appreciated the kind and loving assistance from the caregivers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Josephine Coyle; her brothers, James, John and Hugh Coyle; her husband, Robert and her son, Hugh Brian.
She is survived by her children, Jim (Carolyn) of Durham, N.C., Jo Marie (Bernie Green) of Bozeman, Mont., Roberta of Hansville, Wash., Sheila (Randy Burggraff) of Round Mountain, Nev., Michaela (Mark Jones) of Huntley, Mont., and Bruce (Jami) of Manhattan, Mont.
