Richard Leonard Catterlin Jr. passed away Aug. 22, 2014 at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. He was born July 7, 1943 to Richard Leonard and Mary Louise (Remfro) Catterlin Sr. in Los Angeles, Calif.

He attended Whittier Elementary and Hellgate High School in Missoula, Mont. In October 1977, Richard graduated from the North Dakota Law Enforcement Academy. After he retired from law enforcement, Richard attended AMI Gunsmithing School.
Throughout his life, he lived in many places. Richard was a specialty deputy in Missoula, Mont.; owner/operator of a security company in Sandpoint, Idaho; police chief in Ponderay, Idaho; police chief in Zeeland, N.D.; a patrol officer in Harvey, N.D.; police chief in Ellendale, N.D.; police officer in Ronan, Mont.; and in 1988, Richard retired from law enforcement. At the time of his death, he was employed at Greater Valley Taxi.
Richard was married to Louise (Franks/Catterlin) Podgorski for 38 years. They later divorced and he never remarried.
He was involved in the Lake County Search and Rescue and amateur ham radio clubs in Missoula and Bozeman. Richard was a lifetime member of the NRA, and he enjoyed shooting, gunsmithing, hunting, camping, and spending time with his family. Richard loved working in all the communities he served in, and helping whom ever needed help night or day.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Steven (Nora) LePaine and Larry (Carol) Reimann. He is survived by his daughter, Tamara L. Danishefsky of Great Falls; sons, Ryan Catterlin (Dawn Crume) of Oregon, Leonard Catterlin Sr. of Columbia Falls, Shawn (Sheri) Catterlin of Belgrade, Rick (Teresa) Catterlin of Belgrade, and Thaddus (TJ) Catterlin of Three Forks; sisters, Linda (Richard) Lewis, Carol Reimann, and Nora (Shawn) Bradley all of Missoula; brother, John or Frank (Erma) Catterlin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Monica Melin of Livingston, Paula Catterlin of Belgrade, Shawnna Rippel of Belgrade, Leonard Catterlin Jr. of Butte, Steven Catterlin of Belgrade, and Lynn Catterlin of Belgrade; five great-grandchildren, Harley Fauske, Kimberly Rippel, Abel Fauske, Emily Fauske all of Belgrade, and Augustus Melin of Livingston; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the ICU doctors and nurses at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital; to Vance and his staff at Greater Valley Taxi; and we say thank you to you all as dad couldn't have asked for a better group of friends and co-workers.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel.
