Charles Walton Hale "Chick" was born June 24, 1927 in Wayne, Pa., and died Oct. 22, 2014 in Bozeman.

Chick was a member of the U.S. Forest Service and served in Idaho as a high school student. He was a seaman in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Chick spent most of his adult life in Wayne as a co-founder of Wolfe and Hale Company, a contractor and general carpentry business. For many years Chick was a volunteer for the Radnor Fire and Ambulance Company, progressing to chief engineer. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Wayne and rode with the Doc Addison Hunt.

Chick and his wife, Jean Scott Hale, "Jiffie," were 46ers, having hiked all of the Adirondack peaks and traversed the Northville-Lake Placid Trail in both summer and winter. Chick also served as Assistant Scout Master in Paoli 1 Boy Scout Troop, leading expeditions to the Adirondacks and Grand Tetons. They retired first to St. Peter's Village and then to Gallatin Gateway, Mont.

In their retirement, Chick and Jiffie lived an outdoor life of horseback riding, serving as officers in the Montana Back Country Horseman Association. Chick skied in to his 80s. He also volunteered for the U.S. Forest Service, packing in hand tools on horseback to maintain wilderness trails.

Chick is survived by Jiffie (Jean Scott Hale), his wife of 64 years; four children, Robert (Sandra), Barbara Hamilton (James), Steven (Marilyn), and Thomas (Pamela); and five granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

Services will be private and at the discretion of the family. Interment will take place at Concordville Friends Cemetery in Concordville, Pa.
