David Ireland "Dave" Granger Jr. obituary

David Granger Obituary

David, 43, died in Columbia Falls, Montana, on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. The beloved son of David and Bean Granger and much loved brother of Ann Null (Dan), Genevieve Vayda, Reyn Vayda (Betsy Czark), Margaret Carver (David Ray), Whit Granger(Anna) and Randy Granger (Natalie). He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, Woody and Eugene Null, Skylar and Blaise Vayda, Julian Ray and Katherine, Sarah and Emily Granger.

David graduated with the Class of '91 from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., where he excelled in lacrosse and other varsity sports. He also played ice hockey at the Chevy Chase Club from the time he was four. He was elected captain and selected best offensive player in various sports many times.

David graduated from the University of Vermont in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. With his love of the outdoors, he then taught -- and skied – in Stowe for two years before moving to Boulder, Colorado, for graduate school, receiving a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He moved to Bozeman, Montana, in 2006. There he was Program Director for the Big Sky Youth Empowerment Program working with at-risk youths, guiding them in outdoor activities as well as in classroom settings to help them develop life skills. He cherished this not as a job but as a calling. The young people whose lives he touched loved him, and they knew of his devotion to them.

David leaves many friends wherever he lived. His friends in Montana will remember his amazing energy, infectious laugh and what he gave to others. He graced his friends with kindness, thoughtfulness and inclusion. His spirit will carry forward with all.

Gatherings for David will be held in Boulder, Colorado, on Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at North Boulder Park (contact: Dave Slade 303-641-8462) and in Bozeman, Montana, on Tuesday, June 28, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lindley Center (contact Pete MacFadyen 406-539-0399 or Tom Winston 406-579-6057), and a service will be planned in Washington in the fall.

Contributions in David's memory can be made to BYEP, P.O. Box 6756, Bozeman, MT 59771.

Still in shock at the loss of Dave, a soul who brought light and intelligence to all who crossed his path. His impact on my son was beautiful and changed the trajectory of his future. How I/we wish his kind heart was still here to touch others lives. He played lacrosse with my son just " for fun". So sorry. May God swoop you up and never let you go.

Dave was such a bright light. My condolences for your loss and indeed the loss of the world. We met Dave by picking him up hitchhiking from Bridger Bowl and became good friends with him, sharing meals, laughter, and memories.
