During this period she became a finalist for Miss Great Lakes.
Dorothy married William (Bill) Grubbs in 1949. After a number of moves in the southern Michigan area they moved to Pine Lake, Mich. where Dorothy founded and became the first president of the Women's Garden Club. In the early 70s, Dorothy designed the home she and Bill built on Upper Long Lake. They only had two years to enjoy it when Bill was transferred to Chicago. After a number of years, Dorothy and Bill returned to Michigan where they lived until moving to Fort Collins, Colo. in 1983. In 2012, Dot (as she was known) and Bill moved to Bozeman to be with their son Bruce so she could be treated at Spring Creek Lodge and Bill could live across the street from her at the Bozeman Lodge.
