Ebba Joan Gilbert passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2009. She was born in Dillon on Jan. 26, 1914, to Albert and Pedersine (Sine) Andersen, the youngest of three children.

She attended Beaverhead County schools, where she excelled academically and on the women's high school basketball team. She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star. She graduated from the Normal College in Dillon, now the University of Montana Western. She then taught grade school at Armstead (now under Clark Canyon Reservoir), and in Bozeman.

In 1937, Ebba moved to California to marry Check Gilbert, of Dillon. In California they raised their children, Bev and Rod. Ebba returned to Long Beach State College to receive her bachelor's degree and then taught for several years. After many successful years, they retired to Victor, in the Bitterroot Valley in Montana and traveled in the winters. A few years after her husband's passing, she moved to Bozeman and enjoyed many years of life there.

Ebba was preceded in death by her husband Chester (Check) Gilbert, parents Albert and Sine Andersen, sister Cora Benson (Arnold), of Dillon, brother Ejner Andersen (Alice), of Wendell, Idaho, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins in the Andersen family.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly J. Gilbert, of Oakland, Calif., her son, Rodney C. Gilbert, of Bozeman, her grandson, Matthew W. Gilbert, of San Francisco, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

Cremation has taken place and she will be interred in Dillon next to her husband. Memorials can be sent to the Auxiliary of the Gallatin Rest Home, 1221 W. Durston Rd, Bozeman, MT.
