Emily Jane Gentholts, 20, of Bozeman passed away June 25, 2007, in a car accident near Butte. Emily was born Feb. 28, 1987, in Bozeman to David and Jane (Falk) Gentholts.
Emily's early years were spent in Big Sky where she was able to hike, raft, ski, and go camping with her family and friends. She attended Ophir School during the "early years" and took part in the many school activities it offered. Her family moved to Belgrade where Emily attended sixth and seventh grades before moving to Bozeman for her final schooling.
While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, she participated in Bozeman Senior Highs' band, track and theater programs. She received a scholarship to Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and had just completed her sophomore year's program in the chemistry department. Emily was one of 12 students chosen to participate in the Research Education for Undergraduates program at Montana State University and was doing research for Dr. Gary Noble in the plant sciences department.
Emily loved team sports, especially hockey. She started playing during her time in Belgrade and became captain of Team Montana, a team of young women from numerous communities in western Montana. At Gustavus, Emily was team manager for their women's hockey team as well as playing weekly on an adult league in Mankato. Emily's latest sports passion was playing ultimate frisbee and she had been elected president of the campus club. She was returning from a tournament in Park City, Utah, at the time of her death.
Emily was a quiet, studious child with a definite zest for life. She had developed a deep relationship with God. Her faith and the Catholic Church formed an important part of her life. It was a foundation for her values, her ethics and her love of life.
Survivors include her parents; her sister, Winifred Anne Gentholts of Leadville, Colo.; maternal grandparents, Doris and Jack Falk of Little Falls, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Norris and Becky Gentholts of Bozeman; aunts and uncles, Anne and Tom Woodruff of Big Sky, John and Vicki Falk of Maple Grove, Minn., Gary and Twila Falk of Eagan, Minn., Tom and Libby Purdy of Ben Lomond, Calif.; and cousins, Brittany and Jason Falk, Grant and MacKenzie Purdy.
A celebration of Emily's life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Church, followed by interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Gustavus Adolphus General Scholarship Fund, care of Anne Johnson, 800 W. College St., St. Peter, MN 56082.
