Father James C. McCarthy, 71, died early Tuesday morning at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings where he has been a patient.

This past Easter Sunday, his Butte home caught fire. Father Jim spent a month at the Burn Center in Salt Lake City. In August he returned to Bozeman. He was then hospitalized in Bozeman and Billings.
James Charles McCarthy was born in Butte on Jan. 2, 1936, the son of John and Ann (Harrington) McCarthy. After attending St. Joseph Elementary and Christian Brothers High School in Butte, he graduated from Carroll College and attended St. Thomas the Apostle Seminary in Seattle. He was ordained as priest on June 2, 1962.
Following ordination, Father McCarthy served as assistant at Holy Rosary in Bozeman before being assigned to the faculty at Carroll College in June 1965. Except for time at graduate school at the University of Notre Dame and the University of London, England, he served at Carroll College until February 1991, when he went on active duty as an Army chaplain. While at Fort Lewis, Wash., he contracted Guillain-Barr syndrome and was placed on medical leave.
Beginning in August 1992, he served as a chaplain at St. James Hospital in Butte until he went on medical leave in January 1999. He was granted senior status in the diocese on July 1, 2001, and has resided in Butte.
His sister, Sister Anita McCarthy, BVM, and his parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by his brother, Monsignor John F. McCarthy of St. Louis; and first cousins, Timothy (Jo Ann) McCarthy, Daniel (Mary Ann) McCarthy, James (Kim) McCarthy, Mary Jo McCarthy, Rita (James) Peek, Colleen (Thomas) DeWine, Maria (Gary) Goebel, Ann McCormick and Margaret (William) Tuatara. He is also survived by numerous other cousins.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at St. Joseph Church in Butte, with the Rosary being prayed prior to the Vigil Service, which begins at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Monsignor John McCarthy will be assisted by Monsignor Kevin O'Neill, vicar general of the diocese, and Father Robert Hall, pastor.
Pallbearers will be priests of the Diocese of Helena.
