Our proud and much loved soldier, Command Sergeant Major (CSM) George W. Higgins, U.S. Army-Retired, age 84, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, in Newark, Del.

He was born in Helena, Mont., on Nov. 25,1929, to the late Walter M. and Mary A. Higgins, and grew up on the family ranch near Ringling. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and during his 27-year career served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and several U.S. installations.

After retiring from the military, George obtained his MBA at Wilmington College, Wilmington, Del., and then became the college's financial aid officer and veterans affairs coordinator.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William R. Higgins. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline; daughters, Paula A. Higgins and Georgia M. Higgins (all of Newark); brothers, James L. Higgins (Ringling), Donald R. Higgins (Gold Hills, Ore.) and Gerry M. Higgins (Bozeman); as well as nieces, nephews, cousins (including Ruth Mae Welch of Bozeman) and their families.

The family suggests donations to either a favorite veteran's charity or favorite animal welfare charity. The family resides at 53 Anglin Drive, Newark, DE 19713.
