Gladys May Hanes, surrounded by family, died peacefully Sept. 13, 2009, on Grandparents Day. She was born Aug. 26, 1920, to William and Gladys (Teets) Brand in Logan, N.D., the eldest of four children.
The Guest Book is expired.
Gladys attended school in Minot, N.D., and graduated from Minot High School. She attended Minot State College for one year before eloping with her high school sweetheart, Cliff, in 1940. During the time Cliff was in the military and they lived in Coronado, Calif., (when Pearl Harbor was bombed) and Galveston, Texas.
After spending a brief time in Oregon, Gladys and Cliff settled back in Minot where they raised seven children, Sabra, Robert, Cynthia, Pamela, Brenda, Roger and Rodney. When Cliff died in 1977, Gladys was left with two teenage children, Roger and Rodney. After Roger left home and Rodney died in an automobile accident, she moved to Sun City West, Ariz.
In 2001, Gladys moved to Bozeman to be closer to her daughter, Pam, and while here she enjoyed living at Aspen Pointe, Highgate Senior Living and Gallatin Rest Home. At each home, caring and compassionate people assisted her. She often remarked how she loved Bozeman and the beautiful view of the Bridger Mountains she had at each residence.
Gladys loved her family and enjoyed making a home for them. She was an excellent cook, decorator and gardener. She especially loved roses. She golfed, was on a bowling team for many years and was an excellent bridge player and was, at once, in three bridge clubs. In her later years she enjoyed painting with watercolors. She loved games and played dominos and Scrabble with her grandchildren. Gladys was a lifelong member of PEO.
Gladys is survived by four children: Cindy (Gary) Lybeck of Minot, N.D., Pam (Mark) Refling of Bozeman, Brenda (Jack) Moore of Kansas City, Mo., and Roger Hanes of West Fargo, N.D.; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; her siblings, Vi (Harry) Van Sickle of Billings, and Ben Brand of Minot, N.D.; brother-in-law, Bruce (Dorthea) Hanes of Gibsonville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Gladys Brand; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill; husband, Clifford; sons, Rodney and Bob; daughter, Sabra Kleppen; granddaughter, Mari Ellingson; and her special friend, Mickey Saunders.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Interment will be in Minot, N.D.
