Helen Marie Uhlrich, 94, died of heart complications May 15, 2007, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

She was born March 29, 1913, in Bozeman to the late Joseph and Mary (Hagen) Uhlrich and was baptized at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. During her lifetime, membership in the Catholic Church was of the greatest importance to her. Following graduation in 1930 from Holy Rosary High School in Bozeman, Helen entered the Order of Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in LaCrosse, Wis.
From 1933 to 1940 she taught elementary and secondary schools in Wisconsin, Iowa and Washington. She received her college education at St. Louis University and at Fordham University in New York City. Upon completion of studies for a Ph.D. in biological science, Helen became chairman of the biology department at Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wis. She was at Viterbo College from 1947 until 1965. In 1965, Helen left the Franciscan Order, went to Pittsburgh, Pa., and became a member of the faculty at Carlow College.
In 1977 she retired from teaching and moved back to Bozeman. During retirement Helen has given voluntary service to the parish of Holy Rosary and to the community of Bozeman.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Rae Uhlrich of Bozeman and Marge Uhlrich of Prescott, Ariz.; and her greatly loved nieces and nephews, Judy Uhlrich of Boulder, Ann (Dale) Maroney of Bozeman, Dick (Pat) Uhlrich of Richland, Wash., Marilyn (Harold) Nickel of Kirkland, Wash., Raymond (Moe) Uhlrich of Pewaukee, Wis., Carol (Scott) Hein of Prescott, Ariz., Barbara Harry of Phoenix, Ariz., Dan (Karen) Uhlrich of Madison, Wis., Jean (Brent) Murray of Great Falls, Rob (Donna) Uhlrich of Fort Collins, Colo., and Karen (Manferd) Bartz of Snohomish, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip and his wife, Margaret Flynn; brother, Raymond; brother, Louis and his wife, Regina Gaffney; brother, Joe and his wife, Gretchen Lerhkind; and brothers, Herman and Paul; nephews, David Uhlrich and Gerry Uhlrich; as well as a close family friend who was like a sister, Regina Beaver.
Vigil for Helen will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with visitation one hour before.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, also at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Bozeman.
