Henry J. Filson, 96, of Helena, died early Friday morning at Cooney Convalescent Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 16, 1918 in Winston, Montana, the son of Daniel Boone and Minnie Reed Filson and was a descendent of Montana pioneers who settled in Montana in 1864.
He was a decorated WWll veteran who served in the European theater. He received four Bronze Stars and a Presidential Citation.
In 1947, he married Velma Palmer in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Henry ranched with his parents during his younger years until he moved to Helena in 1963. There he pursued careers in graphic design and printing. He worked for the Montana Highway Patrol in Helena and the Anaconda Co. in Butte.
Survivors include his wife, Velma, sons Bill (Carol), Bozeman, Tom (Debbie), Dallas, Oregon, daughter, Dorothy, Belgrade, grandchildren, Jenny Jo, Vancouver, Washington, Dan, Bozeman, step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Lisa, Belgrade and nephew, Joe Filson, Helena.
