Herbert H. Hoey, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at River Bend Adult Family Home in Longview, Wash., of natural causes after a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 12, 1925, in St. Louis, Mo., to Herbert and Vera (Olson) Hoey.

He came to Bozeman with his family in 1938. He graduated from Gallatin Valley High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and resided in Bozeman the majority of his life.

In 1975, he retired from the Bozeman Fire Department as Chief. While in Bozeman, Herb was very involved in the Masonic Lodge, where he was past master of Lodge 18 AF & AM. He also became a Shriner.

Herb was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed one. He would strike up a conversation with whomever, and he never met a stranger. As a young man, his favorite pastime was fishing with his son, Mike, and father-in-law, Carl Bussey.

In 1975, he and his wife, Kitty, retired to Mesa, Ariz., where Herb was the director of Fire Training for the state of Arizona until his final retirement in 1993.

While living in Leisure World at Mesa, Ariz., he was very involved with the Lions, being chosen "Lion of the Year." Herb loved to golf in the Arizona sunshine and enjoyed watching sports on television or in person.

He and Kitty traveled several times a year to Washington to visit their daughter, Linda, and family, where Herb continued to volunteer his time, working at his daughter's business, Longview Insurance Agency.

It wasn't until 2006 that Herb finally and fully retired.

He had a gift of gab and always had a good line or two. He will be missed most for this, as he always made someone laugh.

Herb is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Kitty, who resides in Longview, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tom Doerr of Longview; a son, Michael Hoey of Cuernavaca, Mexico; a daughter, Tracy Miller of Como, Colo.; four grandchildren: Wendi (Russ) Bryant and Nichole (Jerry) Dean of Washington and Kathryn and Jesse Miller of Colorado; three great-grandchildren: Hayden Bryant, Hannah Miller and Jesse Dean; and numerous nieces, nephews and life-long friends.

At Herb's request, there are no funeral services. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Columbia Funeral Services in Longview, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 30772, Tampa, FL 33630-3772.
