Howard Abram Kooiman, 82, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Manhattan, Montana, on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.

Howard was born in Redlands, California, on Oct.9, 1932, the son of Herman and Martha (Dangerman) Kooiman. Howard married Goldean Vogelaar on June 6, 1951, and moved to Bellflower, California, where he milked cows and then drove grain truck until 1978, when he moved his family to Enumclaw, Washington, to start a family dairy farm. After farming in Enumclaw for 12 years, they moved to Lynden, Washington, to continue farming. In 1990, his wife passed away. On July 3, 1993, he married Grace VanderVeen (Slendebroek). He retired from farming in 1997. About ten years ago they moved to Belgrade, Montana, where he enjoyed helping with the potato harvest on his son-in-law's farm. He was a charter member of the United Reformed Church of Lynden and a member of Belgrade United Reformed Church; he was active in his church his entire life.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; sister, Marianne; brothers, Elmer (Trudi) and Adrian (Marilyn); son, Curt; daughter, Sandra Kuipers (Dan); son, Bob; son, Brian (Lisa); and son, Kevin (Hannah); 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; step-children, Margie (Jerry) VandeBurgt, John (Mary) VanderVeen, Susan (Nick) Schutter, and Tom (Erin) VanderVeen; and 20 step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at Belgrade United Reformed Church. Funeral services will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7 at Belgrade United Reformed Church.
