(Feb. 4, 1943 - May 16, 2013)

Jack A. Barwind, who died on the 16th of May 2013 at the age of 70, was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis. He was a well-known educator, administrator, scholar, and consultant.

Jack began his career in 1969 as an Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Cornell's School of Communication Arts. He later became Department Chair of Speech Communication at Montana State University. In 1985, he joined Syracuse University as Area Director of the Speech Communication department in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. While at Syracuse, he spent a number of semesters teaching at their London Campus. Jack took full advantage of the London theatre and sports scene, spending significant time on the West End and at football stadia around the city. In 2001, Jack decided to leave Syracuse to pursue his international ambitions, and took a position as Assistant Dean at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. While there, he developed a serious camel collection. Jack retired in 2004, and moved with his wife, Mary Jo, to Denver, Colo. to be close to their family. Even after retirement, Jack continued to teach online courses at Metropolitan State University of Denver and at Walden University.

An avid reader and prolific author, Jack addressed topics from "Baseball is a Storied Game" (Take Me Out to the Ballgame: Communicating Baseball) to "Communication and the Complex Mind" (The Talk Within: Its Central Role in Communication).

Jack's irreverent sense of humor was well-known, and he maintained it up until the end. He was much loved. He is survived by Mary Jo, his wife and soulmate of 44 years; their daughter, Karie Jo; son, Kent; son-in-law, Mo; daughter-in-law, Monica; and grandchildren, Allie, Ty, Justin and Elyssia.

Mass will be held at St Frances Cabrini Catholic Parish at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 (6673 W Chatfield Ave., Littleton, CO 80128). In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making a donation to a cause that Jack truly believed in: childhood literacy (https://www.justgive.org/registries/memorial/donate/JackBarwind).
