He married Patricia Cox on June 4, 1948, in Great Falls. In 1952 they moved to the family farm northeast of Chester, where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed reading, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, and traveling. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage, so much that the Laird family made a memorable trip to Scotland in 2005.
